The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now in their eighth and ninth years, respectively.

For most veterans of war, returning home after combat is a significant challenge. This series consists of portraits of Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans. Each veteran composed a personal statement, which discloses his feelings regarding his particular experience of war, and the challenging transition home. Filled with a multitude of complicated emotions ranging from pride and self-respect to the devastation and despair of guilt and grief, these portraits illuminate the many layers of complicated individuals. Regardless of one's political ideology, my hope is that this photographic essay will create awareness and self reflection.

It is clear to me that these men are heroes. Each veterans has committed to making a difference in our country, and now, having returned home, each is left to move forward, to heal, and to reclaim their dignity.
