Big Day Film Collective, located in Collingswood, New Jersey is showing "Faces of Conservation: Maasai Olympics" during the month of October.  The show features portraits of warriors and anti-poaching rangers I made while attending the Olympics in Kenya in 2018. Initiated by Maasai elders in 2010 after noting a precipitous decline in local lion populations, the Olympics provide an alternative to the tradition of lion hunting as a rite of passage for young Maasai men and provides an example of a successful collaboration between local communities and a conservation organization.  (The lion population has rebounded since the first games in 2012.)

There will be a socially-distanced opening reception tomorrow, October 10th from 6 - 10pm with an artist talk at 7pm.  There will also be hybrid in-person/online programming on Saturday, October 31st.

Part of the proceeds from print sales will be donated to The Big Life Foundation, which is the conservation organization that puts on the Olympics and provides year-round educational, community outreach, and human - wildlife mitigation programs.
