Palestinian women of Qawawis, ...ent against Israeli occupation

Palestinian women of Qawawis, a village in the South Hebron Hills, start the day by making bread.

Many people of this village live in generations-old caves and keep goats and sheep. Israeli settlements surround the area with visits from violent settlers not uncommon.

When this picture was made in 2005, the people of Qawawis had just returned to their village after a years long fight against eviction due to encroaching settlements.

As the Israeli government pushed forward their construction of what is now an almost 500 mile long concrete and razor wire barrier, Palestinian villagers along the path of destruction come out to defend their land through passive occupation.

The village of Jayyous lost nearly 70% of its agricultural lands due to the construction of Israel's barrier in the West Bank. The farmers must now seek permission to cross the line to maintain their lands.

Statistics show that as borders become physical and evolve, migration is not deterred but only pushes migrants to make riskier attempts to cross.

Pictured here, Algerian migrants detained in Melilla, Spain in a Temporary Immigration Detention Center (CETI). Migrants who make it to the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta are legally able to apply for asylum after which they wait, some for years, in a government detention center, either to be awarded papers or deported.

Concretely highlighting the global connections of power and control - many governments contract construction of their physical borders with Israel security firms, who admittedly develop their technology on the occupied Palestinian population.

The structure pictured here, 40 km (25 mi) long and 6-12 km (4-8 mi) wide barrier, coupled with the sea also controlled by Israel, leaves Gaza, often referred to in common parlance as the largest open air prison in the world, completely surrounded.

The southern United States border runs approximately 1,960 miles with roughly 700 miles containing physical structures.

The structure pictured here, found between Playas de Tijuana in Mexico and Imperial Beach in the United States, is the most recent structure at this location since the first construction in the early 1990s. This $4.3-million expansion updated a dilapidated fence made of train track rails to what currently exists as an 18-foot high series of 6-inch steel piping, coated with rust-proof material that extends 300 feet into the ocean.

Until 1999, the border separating Melilla, Spain from Morocco was not much more then a roll of barbed wire.

The structure now consists of three, parallel, 11km (7 mi) long, 3m (10 ft) high fences, with regular watch posts. Underground cables connect spotlights, noise and movement sensors, and video cameras to a central control booth. If a migrant succeeds to scale the first section of the Spanish border fence, they land in a area of razor-sharp rods designed to inflict grave damage.

Often, these global barriers split pre-existing communities in half, speaking truth to common sentiment at the Southern U.S. border, "We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us."

In late 2018, there were a reported 5,000 homeless people aged 62 and older living on the streets of Los Angeles. Birdman is one of them. 68 or so, he has been living in basically this spot for the last 7 years after an alleged predatory loan.

Statistically, African Americans make up 34% of Los Angeles County's homeless population - hugely disproportionate to the percentage of African Americans overall in Los Angeles County (about 8 percent).

Sheku has been living on the streets for the last several years. An artist, Sheku believes he ended up on the street due to being "gang stalked" because he accidentally witnessed a prominent local politician in a drug house with a prostitute.

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights recognizes adequate housing as part of the right to an adequate standard of living. Further, that as opposed to a narrow definition it should be seen as the right to live somewhere in security, peace and dignity.

Objects can also be incorporated into the concept of what makes home. The belongings imaged here were found along Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica, Sunset and Hollywood Blvds. from Hollywood through Koreatown to Pico Union in Los Angeles.
