Public Project
Drawing on Heritage
Summary
CapU animation alum JoWayne McFarlane develops new techniques to better represent Black hair in animated productions.
“Not seeing Black characters makes you feel less than,” McFarlane explained. “Like you don’t meet the standards for beauty. You don’t feel part of the community.”
Now an alum of the Capilano University 2D animation program, McFarlane is working with Atomic Cartoons to be part of the solution to better represent characters with African heritage.
