Autotomy is the capacity some animals have to change or mutilate their bodies, to adjust to the environment or protect themselves against predators. Michael and Kai are two transgender boys living in Berlin. Being born girls, they barely left puberty when started another changing process, with hormone therapy. They are also a couple, not just changing their bodies, but trying to look as similar as possible to one another. They are not just transgender and stuntmen, they are also punks.

I am deeply interested in sexuality as tool for self-understanding. This series is my attempt to talk about being transgender, under my non-transgender perspective and, most of all, my attempt to understand body transformation as shelter.

This series is part of the project "Ihr koennt euch niemals sicher sein", a collaboration between Ostkreuz Photography School, in Berlin, and centre d'art passerelle, in Brest, France.

The project's original title is "Autotomy is the ability some animals have to change or mutilate their bodies to look like something else and protect themselves from the world and I was amazed to notice that we all do it, not just sea cucumbers".
