Fires in Viña del Mar; Resilient Chileans rise from deadly fires in Chile
The forest fires began in the coastal city of Valparaíso and affected a large part of Viña del Mar, Quilpué and Villa Alemana,
Macarena Ripamonti, mayor of Viña del Mar, told reporters that she was dealing with an "unprecedented" disaster and estimated that almost 300 people were missing.
Debris removal efforts are still continuing in areas devastated by the fire, with thousands of people gathering in the capital city of Santiago to participate in relief campaigns.
Some 20,000 hectares of land were reduced to ashes in the last three days alone, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service said in a statement.
