Amr Alfiky is an Egyptian award-winning documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Washington, D.C. He studied medicine at Alexandria University in Egypt and assisted as a field medic during the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Shortly afterwards he began photographing and in 2013 Amr co-founded one of the prominent visual arts studios, Janaklees for Visual Arts, in Egypt. He moved to the U.S. in 2014 due to the ongoing crackdown on activists and journalists, and began documenting the lives of fellow Egyptian immigrants.
Amr’s work documenting the Muslim American experience in the U.S. has been featured in The New York Times, Reuters, TIME, The Guardian, The Atlantic, Huffington Post and other major international publications. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and Reuters.Amr's work has been displayed in major international festivals including Photoville, Photo Plus Expo among others. In 2017, he was selected to participate in the New York Times Portfolio Review, Eddie Adams Workshop and Missouri Photo Workshop. Beside his work as a photojournalist, Amr was a Photo Intern at the Magnum Foundation and also worked as a teacher’s assistant with Fred Ritchin, the former Dean of the International Center of Photography School and James Estrin, Senior Staff Photographer and Co-Editor of The New York Times Lens. He received his Masters of Arts in Journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Amr currently works as a photo intern at National Public Radio (NPR) in Washington, D.C.
