Summary
Recently published in Atlas Obscura, I spent some time in Sarchi, Costa Rica, documenting the last traditional oxcart factory in the country. Turning 100 years old this year, Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro is run by the last member of the founding family to remain in the oxcart business. Uriel Alfaro Castro still diligently crafts these important carts by hand at 83 years old, and employs a dedicated staff of artisans to construct and paint each cart.
Uriel Alfaro Castro shows his handmade Aztec wheels, which outperformed European designs.
