On the eve of the 200th anniversary of Guatemalan independence, hundreds of indigenous community members and spiritual leaders gathered at Plaza de la Constitucion in protest of the bicentennial celebration. Using a bamboo flagpole, they raised the indigenous flag at the site where the military would raise Guatemala's blue and white flag. Among their grievances was the lack of representation, education, jobs, and the poor management of the COVID-19 pandemic. With military helicopters and planes flying overhead, they demanded the resignation of Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and Attorney General Consuelo Porras.
