All children have the right to survive no matter how old they are, where they are born or who their parents are. Every year in Malawi 120,000 babies are born premature and 28,300 newborns die or are stillborn.
Despite remarkable gains in reducing the number of children who die before their fifth birthday, the reduction in number of newborns dying has not been as dramatic.
The photographs made at Bwaila, Limbe and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital highlight he miracle of life, the strong bond between mother and child, the joy that the bond brings, the tragedy of loss, when that bond is broken and efforts which are made to save the lives of new borns and children under the age of 5.
