Emergence is an exploration of the inner worlds of consciousness, the quantum realms of being as experienced when one journeys inward in states of contemplation or meditation. It is an exploration of self-discovery and becoming. I photograph the plant realm as metaphor for this endless journey.
The images for this series are made in the woods and along walking paths in and around the area in which I live. The process is meditative and requires that I slow down and look closely at what unfolds before me - to be in a state of receivership of what the natural world is always offering. Employing shallow depth of field, the images act as living portals into another realm. These are visual contemplations that beckon one to slow down, to quiet the outer world, to find a place of stillness.
The series is paired with writings by Leonard Koren on the concept of wabi-sabi found in his book Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers. Currently, Emergence is in four parts or chapters, where each part illustrates a quote from the book. This series is on-going.
