Gustine
Gustine is a small farming town in the California Central Valley that has a small community of Azorean Portuguese people who immigrated there over the past three generations. I first learned about Gustine from my friend, Colleen Mullins, who's mother had grown up there, when she asked if I wanted to go there with her to photograph a Portuguese Festa that's held in town every fall. That was about seven years ago. Since then we've been going back a few times a year to make images in the area and visit with friends we've made. While the focus of Collen's photographs are more landscape in nature and relate to her family history there, mine are more simply about the people and the culture.
