There is a certain warmth in Arlene Gottfried's photos of East Harlem, the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It is not necessarily nostalgia for a bygone era, but a true appreciation for the kind of neighborhood life that gave those places a distinct feel before waves of gentrification pushed up rents and pushed out locals.

Arlene Gottfried has passed. May her memory be a blessing.
"I like things that are more pure and less diluted, things that are real," Ms. Gottfried said. "People seem to lose some of their juice when things start going in the direction they are going in now. Too trendy. And too similar. I used to really enjoy people who stood out from the crowd."
Funeral services will be held this Thursday, August 10th at 10am at Riverside Memorial Chapel - 180 West 76th St. Please share info with anyone that knew Arlene. All are welcome.
