On February 6, 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey, centered in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaras province. It turned cities and historical landmarks to rubble, with few buildings efficiently protected against quakes, despite Turkey sitting along several fault lines. Within nine hours, a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit. The events claimed around 50,000 lives and affected around 16 million people, including 1.8 million Syrian refugees. Ten cities were destroyed, and thousands of people were left trapped under the rubble calling for help. Rescue efforts were delayed, leading to heavy criticism of the government, and international teams flew in to help.
