National Geographic: Colombian Guardians
Summary
Nasa A’ (The Nasa Star) is a documentary series about the Guardia Indigena, an indigenous organization in southwestern Colombia, and their fight for survival, for human rights, their territory and their identity in post-conflict Colombia. In that aftermath of this regional conflict, they are raising their voices to defend their land against these new threats putting their survival at risk and too often paying with their lives.
In Colombia more than 1,300 environmental activists and local and Indigenous community leaders have been killed since 2016, many of them defending their land against mining, logging, and drug trafficking. The 2016 peace accord with rebels was meant to end bloodshed but left a power vacuum in the former conflict zones, where criminals and elites vie for resources and profits, threatening community leaders who challenge them."As long as there is no social equality, we will continue to resist and defend our way of existence in our territory”, says Fanor Mulcué, a Nasa leader of the Guardia Indigena.
