Picture A Day Project – Selected Photographs

By: John Robert Fulton Jr.

For all of 2011, I lived apart from my family.

My two sons and wife lived in Michigan and I lived in Texas, where I was working. There were a few, short visits. But not a day passed, when I didn’t want to jump on a plane to Michigan and not have to return to my suburban apartment and my suburban workplace. It’s not as though I was away, fighting a war. It was just ordinary, day-to-day living and dying.

Thankfully, my camera and a project gave each day a literal focus.

I’ve carried my camera every day for many years. Used to think of it as a diary of what I saw and wanted my camera to see, as well, in its own way. Now, older, I think of it as a last testament because, as Charles Harbutt said: “I take pictures because I have eyes and because a camera is a mechanism for cheating time.”

In late 2008, I decided to begin a Picture A Day (PAD) project.

Subject matter could be anything. Airport, water, horses, fields, people, cars, golf, birds, armadillo, cats,  fence, flag, friends. It had to be of interest to me and help me fill in the blanks that daily life provides.

The 35 pictures here are excerpts from my project in 2011. They are reflections, not a narrative.

My project continues: a work in progress. As are both living and dying.
