Gesche Wí¼rfel is a German visual artist. She received her Diploma in Urban Planning from the University of Dortmund, Germany, her M.A. in Photography and Urban Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and her MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2007, Wí¼rfel was selected as one of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries. Some of her recent exhibitions include solo shows at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, OR; New York Public Library and Field Projects, New York, NY; Wolk Gallery, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),Cambridge, MA; Civilian Art Projects, Washington, DC; Goldsmiths, University of London, UK.

Her work is included in the MIT Museum’s and the Portland Museum of Art’s collections, along with many private collections in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

For her Basement Sanctuaries project she received Creative Grants from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance in 2011 and 2012, and a Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF) grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) in 2012. The series was shortlisted in the Professional Competition, Architecture Category, of the Sony World Photography Awards 2014, and selected for the Top 50 LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards 2014.

Her work was published among others in The New York Times, WIRED, mental_floss, GUP, Foto8, Cahier Fotografie, Younger than Jesus, Art Actuel, StadtBauwelt, ARTCO and was presented on WNYC – New York Public Radio. 

Her first monograph, Basement Sanctuaries, was published by Schilt Publishing in Spring 2014.

Most recently she was selected for the Third New York Portfolio Review organized by The New York Times.
