The Day of the Dead is one of the most important traditions in Mexico. In the Central Valleys region in Oaxaca it is celebrated with large parties called “muerteadas” where people dress up and go out into the streets to dance and have fun. Since its origin, those who mostly dressed up and had fun were men, but for a few years groups of women in different towns in the region have been planning their costumes and taking to the streets to have fun and occupy spaces that were previously denied to them in their towns.
These photographs belong to the Women Mask project that portrays women in traditional festivals in the towns of Mexico where they were previously not allowed to participate due to gender issues, stereotypes and prejudices.
