A young Somalia National army (SNA) soldier smiles at the camera at Jowhar Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Somalia. This photograph was taken in the strategic Middle Shabelle region, the Jowhar Town FOB that has been under the command of the Burundi National Defence Forces (BNDF) since 2014. It’s among many photos I have taken during the African Union Transmission Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) handover of forward Operating Bases (FOB’s) to the Somalia National Army (SNA) since June 2023. The drawdown is in line with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2628 (2022), 2710 (2023), and 2719 (2023), which mandate ATMIS to transfer security responsibilities to the Federal Government of Somalia, as outlined in the Joint Concept of Operations (CONOPs) and the Somalia Transition Plan. This photograph is one of the most impactful photos for me as a photographer since its counters the narratives that soldiers are only meant to work under harsh conditions without enjoying their life in such circumstances. This photograph was taken as part of my photography work while camping with the soldiers at their base and it was not staged in anyway. I found the young soldier in the company of his fellow soldiers while having a banter during an afternoon break. Jowhar Somalia
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the Somali National Army (SNA) officers salute as the Somalia National flag is hoisted during the handover of the Orahsan Forward Operating Base in Beletweyne, Hirshabelle State, Somalia on 30 June 2024.
This photo was inspired by my childhood memories. A double exposure of the sun setting somewhere in Somalia with a mix of my sisters' portrait Nairobi, Kenya.
