Elephant seal pups are usually born in October. Their mother will nurse them for three or four weeks, during which time the newborn will triple its weight to 120/130 kilograms, from the 40 kg it weighed at birth. After they’re weaned, they’re left alone on the beach, where they form weaning nurseries. They love to play-fight among themselves and huddle together for warmth and comfort. At this stage of their lives, they’re the most curious creatures. They want to socialize with anything that moves, be it a penguin, another seal — or a human.
