Poland
POLAND, XXI CENTURY
In Poland, the ruling party is currently imposing an ideal of the Polish patriot as a white, fervent Catholic, pro-military and ultranationalist person. The motto "God, Honor and Motherland" is frequently heard in public spaces, schools and media. Those who do not conform to this model are despised as second-class citizens, sometimes even as enemies of the homeland.
In the last few months several cities declared themselves as “LGTB-free spaces” while the conservative press distributed stickers with the same slogan. The last presidential campaign was marked by hate and rejection towards LGBT community and now the first LGBT activists are being putted to prison.
On the streets of the main polish cities, like Warsaw and Cracow, circulates mini buses promoting by megaphones messages against LGBT people, trying to persuade the society LGBT people are pedophiles and constitute a danger to the Polish Christian identity. Public prayers are being organized against the “gender ideology” and to apologize for the sin of sodomy.
At the same time, public schools, military programs for adolescents, based on the motto “God, Honor and Motherland” are being promoted and attracts more students each year. It is not rare, some of those students enroll after into the ultranationalist movements, whose strength and presence in public space is also growing.
I did this photoreportage throughout several trips to Poland, my home country, between the 2016 and the 2019.
