The image we have of Egypt is riddled with clichés: sinistermummies and the beautiful Queen Nefertiti, the deadly curse of the pharaohsproduced by commercial cinema, and treasures shrouded in mysterydistort our view of the achievements of its civilization and culture. Egyptis a land that in ancient times formed a bridge between northand south, between Africa and the Mediterranean, and which, together with the Near East,is a cornerstone of Western civilization.Egypt, shrouded in the mystique of its rich history and traditions, is experiencing one ofthe most profound contradictions in its long civilization spanning 4,000 years. Thestruggle of organizations within Islam for the vindication ofwomen's rights, as well as an opening to Western cultureinfluenced by the strong migration of its inhabitants to find betterliving conditions in Saudi Arabia and Europe, tourism, andoil, make the city of Cairo a chaotic and at the same time strange place, with neighborhoods where one enters mosques and alleys that werelost in the Middle Ages, and places where modernity is confusedwith mysticism.
But we must not forget that Egypt is as important as Greece as a cradle of the culture in which we live. Egypt is debated as one of the most secretive societies on the planet. And one with the greatest desire for political, social, and cultural openness.A country where human rights organizations that are increasingly involved in the Middle East coexist, as well as hotbeds of the most reluctant and orthodox groups within Islam. A country wherehuman rights organizations that are increasingly moving into theMiddle East coexist with hotbeds of the most recalcitrant and orthodox groupswithin Islam, toward the Western world with all that it represents.
