In Kiviõli, a mining town, an ash mountain has been transformed into a ski slope. Kiviõli, which literally means 'oil-stone,' was built around the oil-shale processing industry. However, the town now grapples with the deindustrialization of the region.

Antonina, a former miner who op...o stay in the town. March 2022.

Antonina, a former miner who operated cranes in the Soviet-era Sompa mine. Women working in mines was not uncommon in the USSR. Today, Sompa stands in decay after the mine's closure in 1999. Despite the challenging conditions, Antonina remains resolute, choosing to stay in the town.

In close proximity to the Kivi&..., Keemiatoostus. September 2022

In close proximity to the Kiviõli open pit mine, forests are being cleared to facilitate mining operations. The town of Kiviõli, named for its historical connection to the oil shale industry, has roots deeply intertwined with oil shale processing. Today, the city grapples with the impact of regional deindustrialization. Notably, it is home to Estonia's oldest oil shale processing plant, Keemiatoostus.

I'm glad to see my last series "Ida-Virumaa, Moving Estonia's Mountains" published for the first time in Le Monde.fr
This series is about Ida-Virumaa, a region predominantly Russian-speaking, where Estonia achieves energy independence through oil-shale extraction. However, as the country strives for carbon neutrality, the region undergoes a challenging transition amid the global energy crisis.
A series worked on between 2019 and 2022.
