Public Project
Bridging the Nile, February 2020 Cairo,Egypt
Bridging the Nile is an investigative photo project that seeks to document the bridges that cross the Nile, in five different countries. From the source of the Nile, in Uganda through South Sudan, Ethiopia Sudan, and Egypt. This project investigates and documents architecture such as buildings, and bridges as archives that help us to read cities and understand their history and development. In particular, it seeks to show the influence bridges had on development across different spaces in a city. Bridges as seams connecting the fabrics of cities. Starting with Cairo in Egypt, the project will go all the way down, to Jinja at the source of the Nile, through towns such as Aswan in Egypt, Khartoum in Sudan, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and finally at Jinja source of the Nile in Uganda. The project will include exhibitions in different towns and experimenting with printing on indigenous paper materials made from plants that grow along the Nile , such as papyrus from Egypt and Sudan, Ethiopian cotton and backcloth from Uganda. This project hopes to culminate into a photobook with writings on the subject of bridges as an important historical monument that connected and led to the development of cities.
