There Is A Dream

The 43rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade is the oldest and largest celebration in the U.S., boasting a record 500,000 in attendance. The parade traveled down Northwest 54th Street. It started at Northwest 10th Avenue and followed the route King used to travel when visiting Miami at the historic Liberty City neighborhood.

There are more than 100 entries that include corporate floats; federal, state, and local officials; police and military units; historic pioneers; high school and college marching bands; dance and drill teams; historic MD transit bus; civic, church, community, and veteran groups; and trade unions.

The parade itself was nothing impressive, no relevant cultural aspects, no organized groups showing any creative edge or being instrumental to the celebration. I thought that the people attending were much more interesting than what was happening inside the parade, from their outfit choices to their interactions with their families and neighborhood friends, I found a wide arrange of characters that made me decide to approach this series by documenting those attending instead. My take away is the beauty of a community when it comes together in order to maintain the importance and respect for the legacy and the dream of a man that had a vision of the Civil Rights Movement 43 years later.
