What is a photograph?

If we are going to understand the essence of photography we have to start with the camera.
The camera sees more than our eyes.  I build devices to isolate specific characteristics of the photographic medium.  In this work, water serves as my device.  Water is lens and mirror at once. This allows me to select which of these characteristics to focus on.  Abstraction is thus achieved by the manipulation of this faculty.  The resulting photographs spawned a series of explorations that culminated in video work.

By incorporating natural elements, I push the boundaries of what a camera can be.  In the process of capturing light in different materials, they are transformed.  The material is now a photograph.
