A Not So Safe Country
El Salvador was labeled as a safe third country by the by the Trump Administration to force Central American refugees to seek asylum there as a better option than the United States in order to deal with the thousands refugees who arrive to its southwestern border seeking refugee. President Nayib Bukele, who had recently taking the presidency of El Salvador assured the United States government the country was no longer the violent nation once labeled due to the high homicide rate caused by the gang war. Although the facts are that months before El Salvador became a “safe country” hundreds of Salvadorans had left the country to seek refuge in the United States, having one of the largest exodus of people leaving at once the country due to the gang violence and lack of opportunities due to the gang war. The country was not even safe for the Salvadorans how could it be for others.
