Fight Back
Summary
Fight Back tells the story of Susan Schroder, a Parkinson's Survivor reclaiming her life through boxing.
It's been a day now since having graduated the NPPA Multimedia Immersion, a grueling week long workshop focusing on the craft of video journalism. I randomly selected my topic and set out to produce the best 2 minute character driven piece that I could create with limited time - two days of observational footage + interview; including a few learning hiccups - had to recover from an audio debacle, to editing until the wee hours of a Saturday morning. Didn't think I would survive the challenge once looking at the time late Friday night (around 9pm) and realizing I hadn't started my rough cut after the completion of my script.
Fast forward 5 ½ indecisive hours later and I finally concluded my rough and somewhat imperfect final cut. I called it a night after correcting what stood out the most, a misspelled introduction card, and hit the bed. The next day, was short yet tiresome. We started the day with a couple of "where do you go from here" inspirational sessions and then screened all the wonderful stories produced by my awesome workshop mates. I nearly burst into tears after winning a mug for best recovery when it seemed as though finishing an edit on Friday was impossible.
The workshop ended Saturday afternoon, I celebrated with family that evening packed and set off to the train station the next day. I used the 7 hours of transit time to sleep off the hard work and meditate on the re-edit - exposure corrections, the adding of shots and fixing editing errors undetected by the sleepy eye, I planned to present to the world. I'm glad I had the resources to provide myself with this amazing learning opportunity and look forward to telling more stories like the one you've just seen.
This video is the first edit of Suzie's story.
