Kurdistan Civil War

The Civil War was an armed civil war in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) that took place from 1994 to 1998 between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Kurdistan National Union (KNU).

In May 1994, fighting broke out between the two parties. The clashes left 300 dead, with about 2,000 dead on both sides the following year. According to CIA agent Robert Bear, a number of members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps provided limited assistance to the PUK, and Iran allowed PUK fighters to attack from several areas

The PUK formed an alliance with Iran, allowing Iran to launch a military attack on the KDP on July 28, which faced war with Iran and the PUK. Massoud Barzani asked Saddam Hussein for help, and this vision became an opportunity for Saddam to take over southern Kurdistan. On August 31, 30,000 Iraqi soldiers, led by an armored division of the Republican Guard, alongside PKK Peshmergas, attacked the PUK-controlled city of Erbil. The city was defended by 3,000 PUK Peshmergas led by Kosrat Rasul. Erbil was captured by the Ba'ath army and 700 fighters of the PUK and the Iraqi National Conference were captured by the Iraqi army outside Erbil.

Fighting continued throughout the winter between the PKK and the PUK. Matters were complicated by the presence of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Iraq, which was allied with the PUK. According to some sources, the PKK fought against all groups that supported the PKK He took the opportunity to form an alliance with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and launched an armed operation to expel the PKK from the Kurdistan Region through force and violence. This operation caused heavy damage to the PKK but failed. The PKK succeeded in maintaining its camps in the Kurdistan Region.

Despite the ceasefire, new fighting broke out along the ceasefire line in October and November. During this war, 1,200 people were killed and 10,000 families displaced. On November 24, 1997, the PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire, despite the ceasefire (the PKK launched a new attack on the PUK on November 25).

In September 1998, Barzani and Talabani signed the Washington Agreement, which became a formal agreement in which the parties agreed to share revenues, share forces, and separate South Kurdistan from the PKK. Prohibit, and prevent the Iraqi army from interfering in Kurdish areas. Unfortunately, this agreement did not organize the Kurdish forces. They are still against each other
