Cubers use apps to time their solves and to save those times. The apps also provide the "scramble" or steps to set up the cube for the next solve. A "scramble" might look like this -  L R2 D2 U F' D F2 R2 B L D2 R F' D L R U2 R2 U F2 L' R2 F L F' L' B2 R U F' (left once, right twice, etc.)

On a busy Saturday at a sports facility in Gatlinburg, Tenn., while soccer teams in cleats and shinguards competed outside, kids with cubes and timers worked hard inside trying for the best time solving a mechanical puzzle. The event is held annually as part of the World Cube Association which governs competitions for "twisty puzzles." It's also become a popular attraction for kids and teenagers who prefer the problem-solving pastime to more traditional sports.

On this day, competitors of all ages huddled together at long tables with mechanical puzzles in hand discussing algorithms and math in an attempt to find the fastest solve. They used portable timers to practice before the official attempt up front. Most competed in more than one event from the traditional Rubik's cube to the more unusual "Clock." They all cheered each other on, especially when personal best times were beaten.

Most of the cubers learn how to solve the difficult puzzle by watching Youtube videos. Because of this, cubers online have developed quite a following. When one competes at a local event, young competitors excitedly film their moves and ask for autographs. Sometimes world record holders will make an appearance to compete. The Netflix documentary, "The Speed Cubers," also contributed to the cubing popularity.
