Slovak Martial Arts , 2017 I Slovenské bojové umenie, 2017 (c) Petra Lajdová
These works were created in collaboration with teacher, choreographer and dancer Michal Dudáš and dance performer Peter Vajda. I am very happy that you can see this jump from central Slovak Podpoľanie or the Zemplín stork these days in Rome, in the Loosenart Gallery, Millepiani.
Martial arts are not only a tradition of self-defense, entertainment or physical or spiritual development, but above all it is the intangible cultural heritage of the nation. As with any job, the process will show more than just a predetermined goal. This was still the case in 2015 after the Slovak Renaissance project, when I transferred my enthusiasm for Chinese, Korean and Japanese martial arts to Slovak a bit. I was carried away by the power and beauty of movement, the performance, the dance color and the spark that doesn't go out.
I got excited right. The process showed me that some movements are significant elements of the original martial art and may have Central Asian origins, whether from southern Russia or the Middle East. Their original meaning - combat training was long before it became a folklore. This is at least part of them.
Loosenart exhibition Foklore nd Traditions:
Pictures cannot be considered to be merely documents. They are also able to capture, preserve, interpret and reinvent occurrences, situations, places that are progressively disappearing or - on the contrary - still surviving, like folklore and traditions. This call aims to collect photo, digital and video works that are capable of catching the essence, the traditional part of our society - e.g. agricultural objects that are not in use anymore, practices or celebrations, folkloristic costumes, ethnic museums and collections. In other words, everything reminding us of our roots, of the most genuine side of the society we live in.
