"Childhood is rough, man. You realize your gunna die and before you die you have to do all these things that you don't want to do," - Parker Hannahs

Loss is at the root of the human experience which allows us to process this concept in wildly different ways. The Grass is Grey on the Otherside is a window into how I shared my loss of a dear friend due to a drunk driving accident. Right down the street from his house, he drove his car at 80 mph into a tree on the side of the road. His life ended in a split second. We found his car completely obliterated on the side of the road with Kyle inside, laying limp, head on the steering wheel. We screamed and cried for help, whaling for our lost friend. The rest of it plays like a film in my mind, watching all the little parts move as police lights flash and EMT's arrive at the scene. They drape the tarp over the hood and shake their heads. People came and went, to see what had happened. Close friends and acquaintances alike spilled over the yellow tape that had blocked the scene of the accident. Eventually we were ushered away, leaving our dear brother behind.

This portrait series is a portal into each individual heart, taken at the moment that they felt their loss the strongest during our interviews. My goal was to capture how our losses affect us physically and carries us through our lives. Some wear their loss on their hearts while others burry it deep down, allowing it to leak out into their daily lives. It's important to talk about our mental health and share our complex emotions so they do not compound on each other or sneak up on us when we least expect it. If you find yourself looking to escape, don't find it at the bottom of a bottle.

Please, don't drink and drive.
