THE SEA IS CALM TONIGHT
A ongoing meditation by the ocean informed by my desire to feel deeply and self discover through making photographs. I created this series along the central California coast during a three year period. The images are intended to suggest rather than explain. With this work I am interested in the observation and feeling of space as a subject as opposed to representation of objects. I am drawn to the mystery of the seascape and the pervading sense of the unknown. In this work I have used long exposures during both day and night, as well as double exposures. This poem by Tessho, written at the time of his death, conveys the feeling I have about these pictures and the act of standing next to the void and photographing:
Finally out of reach
No bondage, no dependency.
How calm the ocean,
Towering the void.
