Yaqui land and communities in Tòrim y Pòtam of the Guaymas Municipality in Sonora, Mexico.
2017
S O N O R A is a story about a drying landscape where a quinceañera in a pink dress looks like a flower in the desert, where indigenous people survive ceremony in the face of violence, extraction, and neglect. It is also a conversation with my own spiritual connection to ancestral lands in Mexico. These photographs are part of a photo essay of an indigenous landscape and the Yaqui community in Tòrim, a rural town of about 770 people in Sonora, Mexico. Tòrim is one of many indigenous towns suffering a water and environmental crisis and I was lead to this town as a videgrapher for Tahila Mintz’ Woman of the Water, a documentary about indigenous women water protectors where I made footage of what their resistance looks like.
