THE BUTTEFLY'S FALL - POSTCARDS FROM TOKYO
The Butterfly's Fall or The Butterfly's Autumn is a photographic project and video installation in which the artist invites the viewer to enter her world and discovering her reality filtered by her own perception.
In particular, the city of Tokyo and its people are the main the protagonists of this work.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by a video, in which the artist, nude in an empty room, as in a process of self-therapy, scans memories of her painful childhood made of rapes and violence.
The video has a strong emotional content but at the same time it's very poetic and delicate.
The images tell a mystical and ancestral reality where words appear in Kanji on the artist's bare skin as scars, while her voice off recalls the traumatic events of a violated childhood, ghosts of the past that have always accompanied her entire life.
Over the past two years, the artist has put into practice several photographic and video "experiments" to tell her story and her past. With this work Monica exceeds the traditional introspective vision, elaborating it through some sort of "pilgrimage" in Japan. The photographs expresses a poetic vision of Tokyo, a kaleidoscope of images of everyday life portraying women of all ages; forgetting for a moment, the chaos and psychedelic lights of a city that never sleeps.
