The acclaimed visual artist, documentary photographer, and filmmaker Natalija Gormalova will present selections from her ongoing documentary series Woven Fates at the 4th Edition of the Africa Foto Fair (AFF 2025), taking place from November 22 to December 7, 2025, at La Maison de l’Art in Grand-Bassam. The Africa Foto Fair is a pioneering platform connecting Africa to the world—and the world to Africa—through the power of photography. Now in its fourth year, AFF continues to build a global community that promotes exchange and supports the growth and recognition of photography from the African continent. This year’s edition will feature the work of photographers from over 30 countries, celebrating diverse narratives, perspectives, and visual languages that shape the contemporary photographic landscape. Gormalova’s inclusion in this year’s fair highlights her deep engagement with themes of women’s rights, environmental change, migration, memory, mental health, and identity. Through her lens, she weaves together intimate stories that transcend borders, inviting viewers into a dialogue about resilience, belonging, and shared humanity.
Born in Latvia and based in Accra, Ghana, Natalija Gormalova studied at the London College of Communication and later earned her Master’s in Photography from the Royal College of Art. Her career spans nearly a decade of creating impactful visual work across Africa, including assignments for Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Associated Press (AP). Her photography has been featured in major international publications, including The New York Times, National Geographic, The Guardian, and The British Journal of Photography. In addition to her photography practice, Gormalova is an accomplished filmmaker. Her debut short film, Spirits We Dance, portrays the lives of two disabled dancers in Accra, connecting their physical and spiritual worlds through movement. The film has received global acclaim, including Best Experimental Film at the Cannes Independent Film Festival and Best Director at the Montreal Independent Short Film Festival. Gormalova’s participation in AFF 2025 reflects her continued commitment to using visual storytelling as a means to foster empathy, understanding, and cultural dialogue.
