Every year from 20th-25th August, Mount Tomorr, near the Albanian city of Berat, is the site of a large pilgrimage and feast in honour of Abbas Ali, the 7th century martyr venerated by Shia and Sufi Muslims. The pilgrimage, especially important to Albania's Bektashi Sufi order, involves several days of prayer at various sites that Abbas Ali is believed to have visited on horseback, when he spent five days resting on the mountain before leaving for Mount Olympus. Pilgrims light candles, leave offerings and pray at different sites, making their way to the highest point where Abbas Ali is believed to be entombed.
