As wildfires rage across California most of Northern California woke up to darkness and an intense orange sky that felt every bit as apocalyptic as it looked. The city was shrouded in darkness for the entire day and as morning gave way to afternoon the orange sky turned yellow. All photos in this set were shot between 10AM and 2PM. All photos shot on assignment for the Washington Post.
Warmer. Burning. Epidemic-challenged. Expensive. The California Dream has become the California Compromise.
For the first time in a decade, more people left California last year than arrived. The realities of flooding, drought, wildfires and high costs are weighing on a weary public.
