Hi, I am Polly Irungu, founder of Black Women Photographers, a global community and directory of Black women photographers. Before you explore the site, it should go without saying that I am not the first person to create a platform for Black women and non-binary photographers.

I’m so thankful for the many, many people who have been doing the work long before me such as Daniella Zalcman, founder of Women Photograph, Brent Lewis and Andrea Wise, founders of Diversify Photo, Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, founders of The Everyday Projects and Everyday Africa, Aaron Turner, founder of The Center for Photographers of Color, Jai Lennard, founder of Color Positive, NABJ Visual Taskforce, and Authority Collective.

All of these people and organizations have supported me in one way or another throughout my journey thus far. And like many of you, I have been inspired by the tireless and thankless work they do to improve our industry. I’m launching this platform as a way to contribute to their efforts and as a small token of appreciation to all Black women and non-binary photographers worldwide.

With love from Brooklyn, NY,
Polly
