Brazilian photographer Rafael Vilela presents his ongoing project “Forest Ruins”, about the effects of the climate crisis and urban growth on Brazil’s indigenous peoples at the Bronx Documentary Center on Friday, February 3rd. “Forest Ruins” addresses the role of cities in the climate crisis from the Guarani Mbyá Indigenous people’s perspective in São Paulo, Brazil.

Rafael Vilela is a Brazilian photographer and explorer currently reporting on the climate and economic crisis in his country for National Geographic and Washington Post. His project ‘Forest Ruins’ documenting the resistance of the Guarani-Mbya indigenous community on the outskirts of São Paulo, the biggest metropolis on The Americas, was shortlisted on the Leica Oskar Barnack award in 2022. Vilela was also awarded with the NGS Explorer grant and the CatchLight Global Fellowship in 2022.
