Tintype, also known as a melanotype or ferrotype, is a photographic process that creates a direct positive image on a thin sheet of metal. Despite its name, the metal is not actually tin but is coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, which serves as the base for the photographic emulsion. This technique, introduced in 1853 by Adolphe Alexandre Martin in Paris, became a popular and enduring method in early photography.
Building on my experience as a photo lab technician and with a focus on sustainability, I have adapted this historic process using modern digital techniques. These images are created without the use of traditional chemicals or Photoshop retouching, reflecting my commitment to preserving the planet while honoring the aesthetic of this timeless photographic art form.
