Summary
Total Solar Eclipse, Crowd Photography at the Jiffy Treet, Phat Daddy's BBQ, the Tap Hole and Hoosier Putt Hole in Ellettsville, IN, USA on Mon., Apr. 8, 2024. Photos by Kathryn Coers Rossman.
Scooping since 1948, Jiffy Treet has over 40 homemade ice cream flavors, including eclipse flavors: Cosmic Stardust, Solarburst and Lunar Blackout and specials: Total Eclipse of the Tart Freeze, Shadow and Light Delight Sundae, Cosmic Cyclone and Galaxy Lemonade Slush. The adjacent property is Phat Daddy's BBQ and the Hoosier Putt Hole mini-golf, which sold and was remodeled after the previous owner committed a notorious murder.
The Ellettsville/Bloomington, Indiana area anticipated 300,000 tourists for the eclipse, with local business groups calling this the largest tourist event in Indiana's history. Indiana University—Bloomington’s eclipse celebration included guest appearances by William Shatner and Janelle Monáe.
Current estimates of actual visitors fell below expectations. Despite this, the eclipse was an opportunity for camaraderie, awe and wonder amongst locals, who had the best view of this spectacle on the planet.
Sixteen of images from this series were published by The Herald-Times, part of the USA TODAY Network. Much gratitude to Rich Janzaruk.
