Anastasia Samoylova's book FloodZone was published by Steidl in 2019. She will present a solo exhibition of the project at USF Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa in January 2020 and The Print Center in Philadelphia in April 2020.
Recently Samoylova was awarded two grants for FloodZone, the South Arts Fellowship and Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography. FloodZone is grounded in Samoylova’s longstanding attention to the differences between natural versus constructed landscapes, and to the role that photographs play in creating collective memories and imagined geographies. Her other series, Landscape Sublime, explores how social-media images and the repetition of certain motifs inform an understanding of natural phenomena. In the recent years the project has been frequently commissioned as large-scale public art installations as well as shown in a number of solo and group exhibitions. Her work will be presented at the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany, as part of the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie 2020; recent exhibitions include Salisbury University; Flowers Gallery London; Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago; Purdue University; Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; Griffin Museum of Photography; Aperture Foundation; as well as numerous festivals in Brazil, Belgium, France, Israel, Spain, Netherlands and South Korea.
Her work is included in the collections of the Perez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago, and Art Slant Collection Paris, among others. Samoylova has published with Bloomberg Businessweek and Markets, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Smithsonian Magazine, FOAM, Wired, Art Press and Monocle. She has lectured as an invited artist at George Eastman Museum, ParisPhoto, and SVA New York, among others.
