Overview: Visual narratives and storytelling by José Sarmento Matos | Online Talk | May 2023
Join Portuguese documentary photographer José Sarmento Matos who will be discussing his latest long term documentary projects, alongside sharing his approaches to stories and assignments; the topics and the people that are a part of them; visually, personally and journalistically.
José will go through his recent work “Jamaika”, developed in Portugal during the pandemic and funded by the National Geographic Society. The collaboration of the photographer and the community “Jamaika” resulted in a multimedia piece: a film, a photographic body of work and an exhibition at Lisbon ́s MAAT museum. Among other issues, the project sought to highlight housing inequalities during a period of continual lockdowns and confinements in Portugal.
In this talk José will share his ethos of collaborative processes, and invite viewers to contemplate care, connection and equality within the creation of telling personal stories through photography.
Lastly, José will also be discussing his documentary work in parallel to his long term street photography series.
