On a series of travels in the Netherlands I have been been photographing coastal landscapes, including low-lying areas near but not directly facing the ocean. Locations extend from the Wadden Sea islands and the north coast of Groningen south to Zeeland, and the images include beaches and nature preserves, agricultural lands, urban areas and elements of the famous Dutch flood-control infrastructure. As the images accumulated, I realized that what most intrigues me about these settings is their deeply provisional status. In each of these scenes, one can scarcely view what is "there" without questioning what will become of this place as the planet warms and sea levels rise. Whatever the future holds, the fate of these landscapes lies in the balance between the dangers and protections created by human design.
