Bulgaria, Nikopol. A view of Turno Magurele industrial area. Turno Magurele industries caused a massive pollution of the area. At the beginning of the 2000s, many inhabitants of the Bulgarian town Nikopol owned gas masks because the high air pollution caused by the fertiliser factory on the Romanian side of the Danube.
Romania, Giurgiu. A man working as security guard stand on a barrack in front of an abandoned factory that he watch.
Portugal, Vila nova de Cerveira. A group of local boys stand in front of a soccer field on some fake grass. The plastic grass is used only for special events to avoid the usage.
Bulgaria, Rupite. Thermal bath facilities. Close to the thermal facilities was built the mausoleum to Baba Vanga, laso called the "Nostradamus of the Balkans", a very famous Bulgarian clairvoyant. Today the place is a renowned tourist attraction.
Latvia, Liepaja. August 2020. A view of Liepaja beach. In 1944, during the Second World War, German Nazis and Latvian collaborators exterminated the local Jewish population, which had numbered about 7,000 before the war. During the period 1944–1945, as the Soviet Union began its offensive to the Baltic Sea, Liepāja was within the "Courland Pocket". It was occupied by the Red Army on 9 May 1945. Thousands of Latvians fled as refugees to Germany. The city had been devastated during the war, and most of the buildings and industrial plant were destroyed. On 25–29 March 1949, the Soviet Union organized a second mass deportation to Siberia from Liepāja. Under the Soviet Union government, Liepaja became a military base city where to enter the city it was necessary a special permit.
France, La Mongie. A view of a building belonging to a ski resort. According to the European Environment Agency, Europe’s mountain regions may suffer some of the most severe impacts of climate change. Increasing temperatures can change snow-cover patterns and lead to water shortages and other problems such as reduced ski tourism.
Spain, Cardona. A view of a mountain of salt, a geological unique of the Pyrenees. In the area the salt mining has been the main activity for decades. The excessive extractions of salt caused the contamination of the aquifer ground.
Belgium/Netherland, Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau. Baarle-Hertog is noted for its complicated borders with Baarle-Nassau, Netherlands. The complex border was created after the Treaty of Ma- astricht was signed between the Netherlands and Belgium in 1843. In total it consists of 24 separate parcels of land, none of which is actually contiguous with the bulk of the territory of Belgium. During the First World War, this situation meant that the German Imperial Army could not occupy these parts of Belgium without crossing the Netherlands, which the Dutch government did not allow. Thus, these pieces of Belgium became a place where refugees could safely stay. Some houses in the town of Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau are divided between the two countries. At one time, according to Dutch laws restaurants had to close earlier. For some restaurants on the border, this simply meant that the customers had to move to a table on the Belgian side.
Germany, Seebad Prora. Germans visit the Sea resort complex under renovation in Seebad Prora. The complex was built by Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1939 as a beach resort. It consisted of eight identical buildings and was 4.5 km in length parallel to the beach, with the surviving structures stretching 3.0 km.
Although the buildings were planned as a holiday resort, construction was not completed and they were not used for this purpose. During the Allied bombing campaign, many people from Hamburg took refuge in one of the housing blocks, and later refugees from the east of Germany were housed there. By the end of the war, these buildings housed female auxiliary personnel for the Luftwaffe. The Soviet Army’s 2nd Artillery Brigade occupied block 5 of Prora from 1945 to 1955. After 1956 the buildings became a restricted military area housing several East German Army units. After the German re-unification the building was first supposed to be demolished and them it became a landmark building. In 2013, a German company bought the rights to refurbish Prora and market the units as summer homes, refurbished apartments in complex were on sale for as much as 700,000 euros ($900,000) apiece.
Austria, Braunau am Inn. The Confluence between the Enknach River and the Inn River in Braunau an Inn. Braunau is an Austrian city that became famous to be Hitler’s birthplace. I recent year Hitler’s birth house became a meeting point for neo-nazi groups, also for this reason the city hall decide to remove the honorary citizenship to Hitler (2011) and to start the procedure to destroy the birth house of the dictator (2016).

Italy, Basovizza. A commemorative tomb stone near the Foibe massacres of Basovizza. The Foibe of Basovizza is a hole in the ground initially dag to extract coal, in 1945 Jugoslavian partisans used de Foibe in the ground to hide the bodies of Italian and Germans citizen killed during the Jugoslavian occupation of Trieste.
Portugal, Vila Nova de Cerveira. A prostitute on the main road that connect Portugal with Spain. Despite prostitution is legal in Portugal and in Spain, the presence of brothels in Spain is the reason of a flux of sex tourists that cross the border.
Germany, Bad Kotzting. People observes a Religious Procession.  The locals pride themselves with having one of the largest mounted religious processions in the world, the "Kötztinger Pfingstritt". Every Whit Monday, the ride of over 900 horses and riders is done to pay homage to an act of generosity and compassion happened in 1412.
Spain, Valcarlos. A church built on the top of the mountain passage that connect Roncisvalle to the France. In this area the Paladin Roland was ambushed and killed.
Lithuania, PlokÅ¡āiai, August, 2020. The entrance of PlokÅ¡tinā— missile base. In September 1960, the Soviet Union started the rapid construction of an underground military base. It was one of the first in the Soviet Union, near the village of PlokÅ¡āiai in the Lithuanian SSR. In 1960, more than 10,000 Soviet soldiers started to secretly work in the Žemaitija National Park for over two years. The base was regarded as one of the top Soviet military secrets, only to be revealed by U.S. reconnaissance in 1978. The PlokÅ¡tinā— nuclear missile launch site started operating around three years after it was established. Lithuanians discovered the existence of the base only after the URSS military forcer left the country. After twelve years of operations, the site was shut down. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the site was abandoned and not maintained, now hosts the Cold War Museum, opening one of the four existing silos for visitors.
Germany, Flossemburg. A tower of the Flossemburg Concentration Camp. Around 100000 people were imprisoned in the camp. Among the death prisoners there was Eugenio Pertini, brother of Sandro Pertini that in 1978 became the President of Italy.
Portugal, Vilanova de Santo Antonio. The Guardian River trace the border between Spain and Portugal for around 110 km, along this distance there are only 2 bridges and 2 ferry services that make possible the border crossing.
Bulgaria, Petrich. Workers in a shoes factory. Several factories in Bulgaria are working for Italian and Greece clients because the cheap labour cost. According to Clean Clothes Campaign 2014 Report “in the region of Petrich half of the population sews clothing and shoes under “ishleme” orders from greek agents for renowned brands and retailers. This is the major source of income in the region – next to border trade and prostitution”.
Workers earns 350 bgn (179 eur) net, which includes an average of 5 hours of overtime every day. This wage does not even cover her food expenses for the family.
Germany, Frankfurt Oder. Teenagers drink beer on German’s Oder river margin; the river is the border between Germany and Polland. In front of Frankfurt Oder there is the Polish city of Slubice, once a unique city, they were separated after the Second World War. In Post Communist era, Frankfurt Oder suffered of high unemployed, low economic growth and depopulation.
France, Pic du Midi. Tourists relax at the top of the Pic du Midi where is located the higher Astronomy Observatory of Europe.

Germany, Altotting. A Bavarese family is seen at the Altotting Sanctuary, a German symbol for Catholics believers.
Shengen, Luxemburg. Asians fish nearby the European Museum Information point that celebrate the Shengen Treaty. The Shengen Treaty was one of the goals of the European Union Country consisting in the elimination of the borders within the EU.
Romania, Giurgiu. A border policemen check the level of CO2 inside a track to detect the presence of illegal migrants. Most of the migrants passing through Bul- garia and Romania want to reach Germany, meaning that neither Bulgaria nor Romania are destination country but they are transit one. Since the beginning of the Syria War Romania and Bulgaria started an anti-migrant policy. In Bulgaria Immigration detention centres and a fence between Bulgaria and Turkey were built; on the other side, Romania voted against the relocation quotas for refugees within the European Union.

Italy, Ponte San Ludovico. A local beach close to the border with france surveilled by camera to prevent migrant to cross the Italian/French border.
Germany, Piesport. The municipality lies surrounded by vineyards, meadows and woods in the Moselle valley between Bernkastel-Kues and Trier. It is the biggest winegrowing centre in the Mosel wine region.
Germany, Passau. A cruise inverte the route in the point where the Inn join the Danube. Due to its location on the German-Austrian border, and in the south-east of the country, Passau has become a major migrant entry point into Germany. In 2015 the BBC reported that traffickers drive migrants and refugees through Austria and leave them on the side of the autobahn.
Belgium, Bastogne. American tourists shoot picture at the Mardasson Memorial that commemorate the Battle of the Bulge happened during the Second World War in which between 63000 and 98000 German soldiers and 89500 American soldiers were killed, wounded, missing or captured.
Belgium, Knokke-Heist. A view of the seaside of the small city at the border with Holland. Knokke-Heist is Belgium’s best-known and most affluent seaside resort, the territory witnessed an overbuilding, today the city has also a Casino among others tourist facilities.
Luxembourg, Luxembourg. Tourists are seen in Luxembourg city center. In 2011, according to IMF, Luxembourg was the second richest country in the world. Its economy is mainly based in banking and finance. Luxembourg is the world’s second largest investment fund centre. In 2009, the country entered in G20 grey list because its banking secrecy laws, as well as its reputation as a tax haven.
Spain, Ayamonte. Buildings on a beach of Ayamonte. Before the economical crisis Portugal and Spain strongly invest in civil construction, today several apartments built are empty while several buildings were left incomplete due to the lack of funding.
Czech Republic, Znojomo. The border between Czech Republic and Austria has been closed until 1989. Today, especially with the entrance of Checz Republic in the European Union, the border is open and people can freely circulate between the two countries; on the Checz side, few kilometres before Austria there is a large duty free shop that sell from alcohol to statues and include a Casino and several restaurants.
France, Strasbourg. A tent of a protester is mounted on the other side of the river of the European Parliament.
Greece, Serrai. Abandoned petrol station. The Greek Macedonia is one of the poorest region of the country.
Czech Republic, Terezin. Theresienstadt was a hybrid concentration camp and ghetto established by the SS during World War II in the fortress town Terezín. Theresienstadt served two main purposes: it was simultaneously a waystation to the extermination camps, and a "retirement settlement" for elderly and prominent Jews to mislead their communities about the Final Solution. Its conditions were deliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, and the ghetto also served a propaganda role. Unlike other ghettos, the exploitation of forced labor was not economically significant.
Czech Republic, Frantiskovy Lazne. A client of Frantiskovy Lazne Spa town read the paper inside the thermal structure. The town was founded in 1793 and until World War I it hosted aristocrats, writers and others notable people. With the great depression Frantiskovy Lazne the town lost most of its patronage and started the decline of the place; after World War II most of the Germans living in the town were expelled under the the Benes decrees and the spa was nationalised under the rule of the Communist Party. After the Velvet Revolution and the fall of the Communist Party, a company named Lazne Franzensbad, owned mainly by one family, bought the the Spa facilities. Today most of the tourist visiting Frantiskovy Lazne are Germans.
Bulgaria, Rudozem. The fence, part of the old Iron Curtain, that was separating Bulgaria from Greece. During the Cold War, Rudozem was one of the illegal passage to Greece, the western par of Europe. It has been calculated that during the Cold War occurred at least 100 fatalities on the border between Bulgaria and Greece. Some years ago, shot bodies were found in the woods close to Rudozem, after an investigation were established that the corps were germans trying to escape to Greece. Today Bulgaria still don’t recognise the action of its border police during the Cold War period. The fence in the photo will be soon replaced by the 86 road that connect Bulgaria with Greece.
Germany, Chemnitz. A view of the city. During the Second World War the allied forces discharged 7360 tons of bombs on Chemnitz because it was present the fac- tory of Panzer VI Tiger I motors. The offensive left the city in ruins. After the war, under the DDR, the city was re-named Karl-Marx-Stadt and rebuilt to symbolise the conceptions of urban development of a socialist city. In recent years, Chemnitz has been the stage of several neo-nazi demonstrations.
Latvia, Liepaja. August 2020. Two tourist guides have breakfast at Karosta Prison, formally a Military Prison and now a Museum. Karosta was a military area from the time of the Kzar and Karosta prison was initially a military prison, with the URSS occupation of Latvia it became a prison where also Political prisoners were incarcerated.
Romania, Dobromir. Local Mufti. Dobromir is the only Romanian village with the 90% of muslin.
Bulgaria, Svilengrad. A petrol station with photos of Putin and Harley Davidson. A percentage of Bulgarian is not happy with the entrance of Bulgarian in the European Union and would prefer a closer alliance with Russia. In the last years several European Countries opened to a closer alliance with Russia.

Germany, Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best known Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Today is a tourist attraction with actors impersonating American soldiers, the tourists can have their photographs taken for a fee.
France, Bugarath. A statue of an alien in a field of Bugarath. Several legends states that in 2012 the apocalipse would take place and one of the few places that would be safe would be the village. Suddenly the price of the houses increased.
Italy, Courmayeur. A view of the last stop of the Monte Bianco’s cableway, the highest of Europe. In the last years, the border between France and Italy moved due to glaciers melting and in 2019 Summer, for the first time, on the Torino Hut, at 3,329 m on the Mont Blanc, the temperature was around 10oC.
Poland, Świnoujście. A view of the open air theatre of Świnoujście. The city was mainly destroyed during the Second World War and after occupied by the Soviet Military until 1957 and the navy harbour until the early 1990s. Today Świnoujście is part of Poland but is the only city that doesn’t have direct connection to the rest of the country, in fact to reach it is necessary to pass through Germany.

Lithuania, Siauliai. August 2020. a View of the Hill of Crosses, a pilgrimage site 12 kms from Siauliai. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaiāiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. Over the generations, not only crosses and crucifixes, but statues of the Virgin Mary and carvings of Lithuanian patriots have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 100,000 in 2006.
Germany, Rickelbuller Koog. A view on the border between Germany and Denmark. Dermark built a 70 km fence along its border with Germany to protect its pigs from disease-carrying wild boar coming from Germany. Export in Denmark’s pork industry totalled 4 billion Euros in 2016, the Denmark authorities decide to build the fence to prevent the spreading of the African swine fever.

Netherlands, Garnwerd. People painting in front of a typical Dutch canal. The history of the Dutch canals is related to the construction of dykes used to obtain land from the sea, in fact most of the Netherlands is under the sea level. With the climate change and the rising of the sea level, Netherland is facing one of its biggest threats, despite the government is rising the dykes but several Dutch scientists are convinced that this won’t be enough and that the country landscape will irreparably change with the rising of the ocean.

Portugal, Vila Nova de Cerveira. German tourists on the Minho River, the natural border between Portugal and Spain.
Romania, Constança. A young couple having some food near an abandoned military bunker. The bunkers were built during World War II when Romania joined the Axis powers. Today they are a tourist attraction and mainly used by young couples to take cover from the wind and from indiscrete eyes.

France, Amelie-Les-Bains. One of the daughter of Frauke. Frauke and his family decided to move on the Pyrenees, there they rebuilt a farm where they grow biological vegetable and host people that would like to help them in the farmer activities.
Belgium, Battice. One of the military post belonging to the Fort Battice military complex. The fort was built after the First World War, it comprised a relatively compact ensemble of gun turrets and observation posts, surrounded by a defended ditch. This was in contrast with French thinking for the contemporary Maginot Line fortifications, which were based on the dispersed fort palmé concept, with no clearly defined perimeter, a lesson learned from the experiences of French and Belgian forts in World War I. the 22nd of May 1940, the fort fall to the German invasion, 34 Belgian defenders were killed in action and 36 died while prisoners of war.
Portugal, Castro Marim. A golf court in Algarve close to the Spanish border. If on one side golf clubs didn’t felt the economical crisis on the other hand been close system they don’t promote the local economy and local business except the club itself.
Germany, Ordensburg Vogelsang. Ordensburg Vogelsang is a former Nazi estate placed at the former military training area in Eifel National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia. The landmarked and completely preserved estate was used by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1939 as an educational centre for future leaders.
Italy, Ventimiglia. Father Julio Alvarez pose in the back yard of his parish. Due to the high number of migrants and the lack of a european response Father Alvarez opened a center that hosts nd help minors refugee, mainly underage migrants that would like to reach France to be unite with their families.
Bulgaria, Bardaski Geran. A MIG plane, Russian Cold War jet fighter aircraft in front of the Town Hall. In Bulgaria are still present several war-related monuments. These Russian Military monuments, standing in the places where they are displayed, are slowly deteriorated by the weather recalling an era that already ended. Most probably if tomorrow they would desassear the people wouldn’t notice the difference.
Germany, Dachau. A view of the crematorium of the Dachau Concentration Camp. Dachau Concentration Camp architecture was used by the SS as a model for the construction of the others concentration camp during the Nazi period. Especially at the beginning of the Nazi Era, concentration camps were built to seem military compounds with the aims to hide the atrocity that was happening inside.
Germany, Boxberg. A view of Boxberg Power Station, a lignite-fire power station. Before the German unification, it was part of the so called “Black Triangle”, a border region shared by Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, long characterized by extremely high levels of pollution. Despite Germany is planning to be a removable energy country, lignite and coal power station are still active.

Germany, Elsdorf. Tagebau Hambach is one of the biggest German lignite mines. For the construction of the mine, the Etzweiler has been destroyed and the Hambach Forest almost disappeared. The mine has been occupied several times by activists.

Italy, Ventimiglia. A migrant stands in fron of the Mediterranean Sea close to the Border between Italy and France. France intensify the controls on the border with Italy suspending the Schengen Treaty. The migrants that try to cross illegally the border between Italy and France have to hike several hills and ford at least one river; the trails is quite difficult and, according to the NGO Anafé, in 2018 at least 30 migrants died trying to cross the border.
Poland, Świnoujście. A bar on the Baltic Sea coast. The city was mainly destroyed during the Second World War and after occupied by the Soviet Military until 1957 and the navy harbour until the early 1990s. Today Świnoujście is part of Poland but is the only city that doesn’t have direct connection to the rest of the country, in fact to reach it is necessary to pass through Germany.
