The Lake
There is an area in Germany where you think you have been transferred right into a different world, like in the movie Alice in Wonderland. You entered a fairy tale world, with castles which are built on mountains and with even bigger mountains as their backdrop. Beautiful lakes are situated in perfect locations and everywhere you look or move, it is almost too beautiful and perfect to be true. This series is my personal portrait of a lake with crystal clear water, water almost like a mirror and with a color changing from emerald green through to the most amazing turquoise you can imagine. Taking a cruise on one of the ships on the lake feels as if you are in a real life Rorschach test image, surreal and trance-like at the same time with the sky, the clouds, the trees and even the nearby mountains mirrored in the crystal clear water. Forggensee is a lake located in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, spreading out below the famous Alpine fairytale castles of Hohenschwangau and "Sleeping Beauty" Neuschwanstein, built by "Mad" King Ludwig II. It is a man-made lake, created in 1954, and in summer is a Mecca for sailing, swimming, fishing and pleasure cruising. One of the most fascinating aspects of Forggensee is that it actually only exists between June and October each year after which the lake is literally 'unplugged' and emptied so as to prevent flooding as the Alpine snow melts and rivers surge.
