Summary
Since 1997, Puerto Rican photographer Mariela Alvarez has been documenting her hometown. She revisits her negatives years later and starts printing. Throughout this ongoing visual journal, which provides a glimpse into life in Puerto Rico, the artist also reflects on her life as a Puerto Rican photographer forced to change careers for financial reasons.—Adriana Teresa Letorney, Visura
Project Text
Since I can remember, I have been a photographer. A few boxes are filled with negatives. I rarely take pictures anymore, only occasionally. Photographers have many monetary challenges. I used to love doing this but haven't been able to do it for a while.
So, I open this Pandora box, well boxes.
With a cheap scanner, I started this journey of making all these pictures come to life. This is kind of like having PTSD from my relationship with photography. There could be thousands of pictures. Showing them up may feel like a responsibility to me. The fill (C-41) was way more fun and challenging as time went on.
