Grandma Tincuta had a loom and she used to weave carpets. At times, I was thinking that it was just a hobby. Grandma Tincuta lived in the Northern part of Romania. At her time Grandma Tincuta was a distinguished physician, well appreciated throughout the countryside: Bukovina.  Maybe weaving carpets was just a local observance and she was oughting to do that. Or maybe she was doing that for the daughters dowry. Or for the sake of her grandchildren.

Grandma Tincuta died in 2008. The house was sold. Somebody told me that nowadays, over the fence, into her old yard, you can see only weeds.

Talking about the loom….nobody knows anything.

Two years after her death I left my dusty town and I decided to spend several days in Bukovina. I was curious to find out if there was still somebody owning a loom. On the top of the hills I met some isolated families keeping the old traditions. Not only weaving on looms but also cuttig wood, breeding horses, forging the iron, boiling the cheese or even praying.

The region is locally called “Sweet Bucovina“ due to the gentle landscapes, but also for these traditions, people and the history of the places. Some establishments here became  small resistance nests standing against the industrialized civilization. I returned several times in the region  and I’ll repeat the experience in the next years just to be sure that I keep enough images in case that this resistance is defeated  by the modern tehnological weeds. Just for the memory of Grandma Tincuta.
