A powerful story I had two days to work on is now out in today's GNY section of The Wall Street Journal. It was an honor to spend time with Secilly Aviles, who at 26 years old, is trying to rebuild her life and the lives of her three children after years living in and out of shelters. She is one of a few students in a paid internship program at Project Renewal which trains the formerly homeless and low income men and women how to work in city shelters.
Thank you to Secilly for letting me shadow her for two days straight and for being so generous to open up her world to me. Was so hard to walk away from her and her family at the end of my official work day knowing that while her story would be neatly wrapped in a photo slideshow, her life and story continue.
